What is Kinesio Taping?

Kinesio tape is a rehabilitative tape that is designed to stimulate the body’s natural healing process while at the same time providing both support and stability to muscles and joints. Because of its elasticity, Kinesio Tape doesn’t restrict the body’s range of motion and aims to support the benefits of manual therapy you get at the clinic. It’s water resistant, has a strong (non-irritable) adhesive and you can wear it for up to 5 days and still has an effect!

Internal effects of Kinesio Tape

  • Improves blood and lymphatic flow into and out of area taped
  • Its stretch properties mimic skin, muscle and connective tissues
  • Adds stability, spring and awareness of stretch
  • Helps to restore normal glide and slide between structures
  • Create a non-painful stimulus and reduces pain in the taped area
  • Alters the activity of tight or weak muscles

Functional Effects of Kinesio Tape

  • Gets you back to training and playing safer and sooner.
  • Recover faster after injury, and prevent re-injury on return to play
  • Protect and stabilise a joint and limits unwanted movement
  • Improve joint mechanics and biomechanics
  • Facilitate muscle activation
  • Enable pain free training and sport participation

Kinesio Tape typically will be used for acute conditions such as swelling and bruising, pain on movement or in rest, poor posture, muscle weakness, poor contraction patterns and instability in a joint.

Some of the common conditions that we use Kinesio Tape for are:

  • Tendinopathy
  • Acute low back pain
