What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is the insertion of fine thin acupuncture needles into the painful area of a muscle, ligament, or fascia with the goal of restoring muscle tension and function. It is used to encourage a mini-inflammatory response that results in an increase of blood flow to the injured area, causing more efficient healing and tissue repair!

It can be used directly into knotted muscles or areas of tightness, that are also known as myofascial trigger points. When applying Dry Needling, the needle is inserted into the heart of the trigger point and can be manipulated in various ways to stimulate the tissue to achieve the desired outcome.

Effects

We try to unload the strain of the tight tissue and decrease the tension in the muscle group by deregulating the neural system (as in going back to its normal response mechanism), to achieve overall muscle relaxation and better functional movement.

Dry Needling treatment is executed in a safe, effective and efficient way that should not be uncomfortable for the patient, and the patient eventually has the decisive vote on deciding on the application. It should always be preceded by a thorough assessment and diagnostic reasoning, after which the therapist can decide whether you are in need of a mild, strong or vigorous treatment. Over the years, Dry Needling has evolved from being a supplement to therapy to being considered a technique in its own right. It is a brilliant tool that is part of any great physiotherapists tool kit!

Difference with Acupuncture

Both practices insert needles into the skin and claim to treat pain, but that’s where the similarities end. Acupuncture uses a person’s energy flow or Chi to treat the discomfort or pain, whereas Dry Needling is designed to stimulate trigger points or muscles that are irritable.
